The Palestinian Authority will seek recognition of the Palestinian State
at the United Nations in New York in late September. The signatories of
this statement re-affirm, as they stated in July, their belief that Europe
has no legitimate argument to oppose this demand. Today we believe that
this date could be an opportunity to present a solution that would benefit
both parties. We call on the Israeli government to refrain from taking
negative measures in response to the Palestinian bid and to explore
instead options to leverage the Palestinian initiative into a new process
which could serve the interests of Israel. Europe should seize this
opportunity to play a useful role in this process.

Autorité palestinienne s’apprête à demander aux Nations Unies la
reconnaissance de l’Etat palestinien ce mois-ci à New York. Nous
réaffirmons, ainsi que nous l’avions fait au mois de juillet dernier,
notre conviction que l’Union européenne ne doit pas s’opposer à cette
reconnaissance. Nous pensons aujourd’hui que ce rendez-vous peut être
l’occasion de présenter une solution qui bénéficierait aux deux parties.
Nous appelons les autorités israéliennes à ne pas réagir négativement à la
démarche palestinienne et à explorer plutôt les moyens de la transformer
en un processus qui peut servir également les intérêts d’Israël. Les pays
européens devraient saisir cette occasion pour jouer un rôle utile dans
cette perspective.
